How to Prevent Mold Growth in Warmer Weather

Summertime brings sunny days, cookouts, vacations, and... MOLD?! While the first three sound very enjoyable, the last thing anybody wants is to have mold living in their business or home. Mold is more likely to appear in the summer months due to factors such as warmer temperatures and summer rain. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the presence of mold indoors can trigger allergies and asthma attacks and increases the risk of illness, especially among children and the elderly. There are many steps you can take to prevent the growth of mold in your business or home, and DLOM wants to make sure you are aware of them!

TIPS TO PREVENT SUMMER MOLD

  • Use your air conditioner on hot days - mold grows best at temperatures above 77 degrees Fahrenheit, so try to keep the temperature lower than that if you can

  • Mold thrives in moist environments, it is best to keep humidity levels lower than 50%. To lower the humidity levels in your business or home, purchase a dehumidifier

  • If your home or business does not already have them, install exhaust fans in kitchens and bathrooms and leave them on longer on humid days

  • Close windows on rainy days - if windows are open, dry the windowsills, floors, and any other affected, wet surfaces as soon as possible

  • Watch for signs of a leak in your roof - a discolored spot on the ceiling usually means a leak, even if there is not water present. Be sure to repair any leaks as soon as possible to prevent mold growth

  • Opening blinds and curtains to let in daylight will discourage mold growth and also allow air to circulate more freely, but be sure to close them during the hottest part of the day to keep internal temperatures low

If, despite your best efforts, mold still develops in your business or home, contact DLOM immediately! DLOM specializes in mold remediation and will ensure that the mold is not only removed, but that the contaminated area is cleaned to prevent additional mold spores from growing.
