Happy National Mold Awareness Month!
It's National Mold Awareness Month, which means it is the perfect time to discuss what it is you, as a business or home owner can do to prevent the growth of mold. Mold thrives in dark, damp places, such as bathrooms, basements, and attics, but can also appear in your ductwork and spread around your business or home when you turn your heat or air conditioning on. Here are a few steps to avoid mold growth in your home:
Identify problem areas in your home - Finding the places in your home that attract mold is important in preventing a future mold breakout. Some places are easy in locating mold such as puddles in your basement from a washer or dryer, or in an attic from a leaky roof caused by harsh rain. Other places are a little harder to locate such as condensation build-up around windows, shower curtains or ductwork.
Dry wet areas immediately - Mold can't grow without moisture, so clean up wet areas right away, preferably within 24 to 48 hours to avoid mold growth. If surfaces such as carpets, bedding, or furniture cannot be dried, remove and replace them.
Prevent moisture with proper ventilation and air flow - Activities such as cooking dinner, taking a shower, or doing a load of laundry produce extra moisture and condensation, making these activities a perfect environment for mold to grow in. Appliances such as exhaust fans and dehumidifiers can help in decreasing the moisture levels in the air. It is also recommended to regularly change air filters and have air ducts cleaned to increase air circulation from room to room.
